The LSU Eye Center of Excellence was created in 1978 as the Department of Ophthalmology and a premier center for research, education, and patient care. This comprehensive center for vision care and research consists of interdisciplinary cooperation among basic scientists and clinical scientists to advance the prevention and treatment of blinding eye disease.

Over the past 34 years, the LSU Eye Center has provided the focus for an interdisciplinary faculty in the fields of immunology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, biophysics, biochemistry, biomedical materials science, and polymer chemistry to apply their diverse areas of expertise to the problems of preventing blindness. The integration of this outstanding faculty and their abiilty to understand basic mechanisms and develop practical applications is the source of the LSU Eye Center's strength and the basis for its national and international recognition.
